Fire Cider is an old remedy traditionally used to protect against infections over winter. It’s based on the old ‘Four Thieves Vinegar’ which, as the story goes, was used by grave robbers to protect them against the germs they’d encounter as they went about their thieving! Anyway, it’s really easy to make and if you do it now, you’ll have it ready to ward off winter ailments and keep your circulation working nicely.
How To Make Fire Cider
You will need:
- A large clean jam jar or kilner jar. If it has a metal lid you’ll need to protect the underneath from the vinegar with a layer of baking paper, and change it every week or so.
- Raw apple cider vinegar with ‘the mother’. This type acts as a probiotic and is much better for you than the filtered kind.
- 4 parts onions
- 2 parts garlic
- 2 parts fresh horseradish
- 1 part fresh chilli
- 1 part herbs/spices of your choice. You could use thyme, rosemary, sage, fresh tumeric, ginger, etc. If you don’t want to add anything and just stick to the basic recipe, just increase the amount of onion.
Finely chop all the ingredients and fill the jar with them. Shake the apple cider vinegar and add that, making sure you cover all the other ingredients completely.
Put the lid on and keep the jar in a cool dark place for 6 weeks, shaking occasionally.
When your Fire Cider is ready, strain, bottle and label it ready for use.
How To Use Fire Cider
As you can imagine, it’s pretty powerful so start with very small amounts and increase them if you want to.
- Add a teaspoonful (or more if you prefer) to hot water, along with some honey for a soothing drink when you’re not well.
- Add a little bit to soups, sauces or stirfries.
- Pop a bit onto your veggies.
- Make it into salad dressing.
